FCC Wrestlers Grapple with Prospect of Four Peat Host State Championships December 13-14

Â鶹´«Ã½ is excited and happy to host the 60th California Community College Athletic Association Men’s Wrestling State Championships. The tournament will be held in the FCC Gym on Friday, December 13 and Saturday, December 14, 2019.

Over 20 teams will participate in this statewide event. More than 140 wrestlers will compete including 12 from Â鶹´«Ã½. The event is expected to boost Fresno’s economy as players, coaches, CCCAA representatives, families and other spectators are expected to stay in local hotels and eat at local restaurants.

Â鶹´«Ã½ head wrestling Coach Paul Keysaw says Fresno is the perfect place to host this tournament. “The Central Valley has a very rich tradition in wrestling. This area knows and understands wrestling.   If you are a supporter of wrestling, then this is the tournament to come to,” he said.

Â鶹´«Ã½ is going into the tournament ranked #1 and is looking to make history. In the 14 years under Coach Keysaw, the Rams have won eight state championships, the last three in a row.  They have come in second place three times. Should they win at home this year, they will make state history. No other team has won four in a row.

The win will also make personal history for Coach Keysaw for the most state championships won by a coach.  He has won 11, including three from Moorpark College.  Other state records could be broken as well.

Coach Keysaw feels good about the team’s chances of winning another state title but does not take his #1 ranking for granted. “Just because we’re ranked #1, it doesn’t really mean anything until you get to the end of the year and you actually win the trophy. We still have to compete. We haven't let up on our training or preparation.  We’re just trying to cherish this journey as long as we can,” he said.

Coach says to keep an eye out for 149 pounder Daniel Ruiz and165 pounder Augustine Garcia to repeat and 125 pounder Mario Moreno who lost in the finals las year and is trying to win his first state title.
